The summer air crackled with excitement as the family arrived in Banff. "Wah! Look how beautiful," Shirley exclaimed, craning her neck to see the snow-capped mountains. Grace, her daughter, smiled, adjusting Max's baseball cap. Thomas, Grace's brother, checked the map, his brow furrowed in concentration. Even little Zoe, usually shy, peeked out from behind Grace’s leg, her eyes wide with wonder. Shirley pulled out her camera, ready to capture every moment.

"How much is this whole trip gonna cost?" Shirley grumbled, eyeing the towering peaks. Grace sighed, "Mom, we talked about this. We budgeted for it."

The gondola ascended, offering breathtaking views. Max and Zoe pressed their faces against the glass, pointing at the tiny cars below. Shirley, however, clutched her purse tightly. "So expensive for such a short ride," she muttered, earning an eye roll from Thomas.

At the top, they explored the boardwalk, the crisp mountain air filling their lungs. Shirley trailed behind, carefully examining every souvenir shop. "Look, Grace! Only twenty dollars for this!" she exclaimed, holding up a small, plastic moose.

Lake Louise shimmered a turquoise blue. "Quick, quick! Take a picture!" Shirley urged, positioning everyone for a photo in front of the lake. She insisted on taking multiple shots, adjusting angles and poses, much to Max's exasperation.

Later, while hiking on a glacier, Shirley cautioned, "Be careful! Don't go too close to the edge! It's slippery!" Her voice echoed across the vast, icy landscape, drawing a few curious glances from other hikers.

In the town of Banff, Shirley stopped at a shop selling Indigenous art. She picked up a dreamcatcher, turning it over in her hands. "Is this real?" she asked the shopkeeper, her tone laced with suspicion. Grace cringed, whispering, "Mom, be nice."

That evening, at a local restaurant, Shirley complained about the portion sizes. "So small! And so expensive!" she said loudly, earning disapproving stares from nearby diners. Thomas covered his face with his hands, shaking his head.

Back at their hotel, Zoe presented Shirley with a drawing. It was a colorful picture of the family in front of Lake Louise, with a big, bright sun shining overhead. Shirley’s face softened.

"You know," Shirley said softly, "this trip... it's been special." She hugged Zoe tightly. Despite her worries and complaints, Shirley realized that seeing her family happy was worth more than any amount of money.
