Grade 2 stories

Grade 2 storybooks on TaleBuilder are written for transitional readers, usually 7-8 years old, which is the J-M band on the Fountas and Pinnell guided reading scale. The chart describes this band as: compound sentences (5-9 words); richer vocabulary, descriptive language; less picture dependency; character emotions and growth; and simple themes emerge. Each storybook was written by a child with a parent or teacher and then illustrated page by page, so the text stays at a length a grade 2 reader can manage while the pictures carry the rest. Read them together at bedtime, let a confident reader try one alone, or use them in a classroom as short, fresh texts at the right level. Every story is free to read online, and any of them can be remixed into a new version with your own child as the main character.
