Stories about kindness

Each storybook here shows a child choosing to be kind when it would have been easier not to: sharing a lunch, sitting with someone who is alone, helping a neighbor carry groceries. The plots are small and concrete, which is what makes them useful. Children this age learn kindness from examples they can picture, not from being told to be nice. The stories suit kindergarten through about grade 2 readers, with simple sentences and clear cause and effect, so an early reader can see exactly what the character did and what happened next. They fit a morning meeting or a social-emotional learning block, and they are short enough to read and talk about in ten minutes. All are free to read online and can be remixed.
