Stories about family

Family stories are the ones children write first, because the cast is already there: a little brother, a grandmother who lives far away, a dog who thinks he is a person. This collection gathers storybooks where the plot turns on family life, from a new baby at home to a weekend visit with grandparents. Most are short, with pictures that carry enough of the story for pre-readers to enjoy them at bedtime while a kindergartener or first grader follows the words. Children tend to recognize their own house in these, which is part of the appeal. If your family looks different from the one on the page, remixing a story lets you rewrite it with your own people in it, at the reading level your child needs.
