Realistic fiction for early readers
Realistic fiction is the everyday world with a story in it: a child who loses a tooth at school, a family that moves house, a soccer game that comes down to the last kick. No magic, no talking animals, just situations a child recognizes. It is where most children start when they write about their own lives, which is why this collection is a large one. The stories suit kindergarten through grade 3 readers. They work as mentor texts for personal narrative writing, since they show how a small true moment becomes a story with a beginning, middle and end, and they work at bedtime for the same reason children like them: they are about kids like them. All are free to read online.
