Theo had an important destination across town. The bus seemed to be moving in the correct direction. She settled into her seat, content with her plans. A morning breeze flowed gently through the open window.

The street names began to change. Buildings looked different, more brick than glass. Theo observed the passing scenery with quiet interest. This was certainly a new part of the city.

3
Theo checked the time on her phone. The screen remained stubbornly dark. This was less than ideal for navigating the city. She pressed the power button again without success.

4
A bus route map hung near the front. Theo squinted, attempting to decipher the tangled lines and tiny print. The task proved challenging from her current spot on the bus. It offered little immediate clarity.

The bus stopped at a corner Theo had never seen. People exited onto a quiet residential street. Theo stayed put, considering her options carefully. This particular stop was not hers.

6
The doors closed with a soft hiss. The bus resumed its journey through the strange streets. Theo felt a familiar tightening in her chest. Things were moving along without her input.

The driver, Ms. Alvarez, appeared quite unbothered by the route. Ms. Alvarez navigated the turns with practiced ease. Theo briefly met Ms. Alvarez’s gaze in the rearview mirror. Ms. Alvarez’s expression remained neutral.

Theo took a deep breath. She decided a different approach might be helpful. Speaking up was an option. It seemed like a reasonable course of action, after all.

Theo reached for the stop request cord above her seat. A soft chime sounded through the bus cabin. Ms. Alvarez pulled to the curb without a word or delay.

Ms. Alvarez listened to Theo’s quiet question. Ms. Alvarez calmly gave directions and pointed to a bus stop across the street. Theo felt a sense of unexpected calm as she understood.
